Twitch Affiliate is the first paid tier on Twitch. To qualify, your channel needs four things in any rolling 30-day window:
- 500 minutes broadcast
- 7 unique broadcast days
- An average of 3 concurrent viewers
When you meet all four, Twitch sends an invitation through email and to your Creator Dashboard. You accept it, fill in tax and payout details, and you can start earning from subs, bits, and ads.
These numbers have been stable for years, but Twitch can change them. Confirm the current figures on the Twitch Affiliate page before you plan around them.
500 minutes broadcast
That is just over eight hours of live broadcast time in 30 days. Two 90-minute streams a week clears it comfortably. The minutes have to come from genuine live broadcasts. Hosting other channels does not count.
If you keep getting close but not quite there, the issue is usually that one of your streams ran much shorter than planned. Aim for at least 60 minutes when you go live, and you give yourself a buffer.
7 unique broadcast days
You need to go live on seven different calendar days within the 30-day window. Two streams on the same day count as one day for this metric.
This is why a "stream every other day for short sessions" pattern often reaches Affiliate faster than "one marathon stream a week". Twitch wants to see that you show up consistently, not just that you have logged hours.
3 average concurrent viewers
This is the trickiest of the four for most new streamers. The number is your average, not your peak. Twitch averages your viewer count across all live minutes in the 30-day window.
Three viewers sounds small, but it does not include yourself or known bots. It usually means real, recurring people watching. For a brand new channel with no friends-circle to seed it, this can take weeks.
The fastest way to lift this number is consistency in your schedule, so the same handful of viewers can find you again, plus a clear stream category and title that match what someone browsing Twitch is actually looking for.
This is the easiest of the four. Followers cost nothing for viewers to give. The number includes anyone who has clicked the heart on your channel page, even if they no longer watch.
If you have a Discord, a personal social media presence, or a circle of friends interested in supporting you, 50 is usually achievable in the first month. Do not buy followers from a service. Twitch detects and removes them, and a small bought-follower base can ironically lower your average viewers if Twitch flags your channel.
What changes when you hit Affiliate
Accepting the invite unlocks:
- Sub buttons on your channel at the standard tiers (one, two, and three)
- Bits cheering, with a share of the bit revenue paid to you
- A pre-roll and mid-roll ad share, depending on category and country
- Twitch payout once your balance reaches the minimum threshold (usually $100, paid in USD, converted on receipt)
- The ability to upload custom sub emotes (one to start, more as you grow your sub count)
You also start receiving the obligation to handle taxes properly. Twitch will ask you to complete a tax interview. UK residents complete the non-US version. From this point on, your stream income is reportable to HMRC.
What does not change
Affiliate does not give you discovery boosts on Twitch. The browse pages do not rank Affiliate channels higher than non-Affiliate channels. Discovery still depends on category choice, title, schedule, and viewer retention.
Affiliate also does not put you in any priority queue for Twitch Partner. Partner is a separate, manually reviewed status with higher requirements and access to additional tools. Most channels stay at Affiliate for at least a year before they consider applying for Partner.
If you are stuck on one metric
If you are very close on minutes, days, and followers but the average viewers stays below three, the answer is almost never more streaming hours. It is usually:
- A category mismatch (you are streaming in a saturated category as a small channel)
- An unclear title that does not describe what you are doing
- Inconsistent stream times so returning viewers cannot find you
- A first impression that drives people away in the first 30 seconds
Watch your VOD with the chat overlay enabled. The minute people leave is the most useful diagnostic Twitch gives you for free.
