How to make Twitch clips

A Twitch clip is a 5 to 60 second segment of a live or recently aired stream, captured by you or by a viewer. Clips are the easiest way to turn live moments into shareable content for socials, YouTube Shorts, or your own highlight feed.

Anyone watching a stream can create a clip unless the streamer has restricted it. As the streamer, you also have access to clip tools your audience does not.

Make a clip while watching a stream

In Twitch's player, the keyboard shortcut Alt+X (Windows) or Option+X (Mac) opens the clip editor at the current moment. You can also click the clapperboard icon in the player controls.

The default clip captures 30 seconds: roughly 15 seconds before the moment you triggered it, and 15 seconds after. Once the clip editor opens, you can:

  • Trim the in and out points to anywhere within the captured window
  • Adjust the clip length up to 60 seconds total
  • Add a title (this is what shows in search and link previews)
  • Publish

The clip is then live at a permanent URL and visible on the streamer's Clips tab.

Make a clip from a past broadcast

If you missed clipping a moment live, you can still clip it from a VOD as long as the broadcast is still on the channel. Twitch keeps VODs for 14 days for non-Affiliate, 60 days for Affiliate and Partner, and indefinitely for Highlight or Past Premiere content.

Open the VOD, scrub to the moment, and use the same clipper. The 30-second capture window still applies, so position the playhead a few seconds after the moment you want to keep.

As the streamer, what you should know

Three things differ for you:

  • You can ban a clip from your own channel. Go to the clip on the channel's Clips tab and use the Delete or Hide option.
  • You can disable clipping entirely or for specific viewers in Creator Dashboard settings. Most streamers should leave it on. Clips are free marketing.
  • You can mark a clip as a Highlight to keep it on the channel after the VOD expires.

Get the most out of clips

Clips that perform best on socials have three things in common:

  • A clear moment, not "the whole conversation around it"
  • A title that tells someone scrolling past what they are about to see
  • A vertical 9:16 crop for TikTok, Shorts, and Reels

Twitch's own clip editor does not crop to vertical. For that, download the MP4 (right-click on the clip page, Save Video As) and use a video editor like DaVinci Resolve (free), CapCut, or Adobe Premiere.

A 30-second clip with a punchy first three seconds beats a 60-second clip every time on short-form platforms. Trim hard.

Schedule and frequency

Some streamers ask viewers to clip funny moments. Others ban viewer clips entirely to control which moments become the channel's highlight reel. Both are valid. What matters is that one person on the team (often the streamer, sometimes a volunteer or a clip editor) commits to publishing two or three clips a week to socials. Consistency beats volume.

Practical things that catch people out

A few details worth knowing before you start clipping in volume:

  • A clip that includes copyrighted music will get muted or removed on YouTube and TikTok. Strip the music in a video editor before uploading off Twitch.
  • Clips of you talking through your own UI overlays look messy. If you stream with on-screen alerts, plan to crop them out when clipping.
  • Twitch sometimes takes a minute to publish a clip. If you cannot find it immediately, check your Creator Dashboard under Content, then Clips.
  • A 60-second clip exceeds the limit of some Shorts and Reels formats. Aim for 50 seconds to leave headroom.

What clips are not for

Clips are for one moment. They are not a substitute for a proper edited highlight reel, and they are not a replacement for uploading full VODs to YouTube. Plan the role they play in your wider content alongside both.
